Urban trees, air quality and human health | Treesearch

The World Health Organization (2016) states that air pollution is the largest environmental risk factor to human health, accounting for about one in nine deaths annually. The problems associated with air pollution and higher air temperatures in cities have been known for over a century, but so have the impacts of trees and forests on improving air quality and regulating air temperatures. Trees, through their interaction with the atmosphere, affect air quality and consequently human health, parti...

Illinois Urban Wood
The emerald ash borer (EAB) continues to migrate across the United States, leaving millions of dead ash trees in its wake. While the deadly beetle yet to be detected in Cheyenne, WY, the city is taking a proactive approach to bracing for its arrival, noting that is has been sited in Longmont, CO, as well as Nebraska and South Dakota. The Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division (CUFD) created an EAB plan in August 2019 and has begun implementing several of its initiatives, including removing and replaci...
The effect of urban trees on the rental price of single-family homes in Portland, Oregon | Treesearch
https://www.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/pubs/39906... [Urban Forestry] [other] [Journal Article] 2011
Geoffrey H. Donovan; David T. Butry
Few studies have estimated the effect of environmental amenities on the rental price of houses. We address this gap in the literature by quantifying the effect of urban trees on the rental price of single-family homes in Portland, Oregon, USA. We found that an additional tree on a house's lot increased monthly rent by $5.62, and a tree in the public right of way increased rent by $21.00. These results are consistent with a previous hedonic analysis of the effects of trees on the sales price of h...
"Evaluating Federal Urban Forestry Performance Measures in Massachusett" by Mollie E. Freilicher

Mollie E. Freilicher
In 2006, the US Forest Service implemented performance measures to evaluate urban forestry management in communities in each state. The Forest Service implemented these measures under its Community Accomplishment Reporting System (CARS).To achieve four CARS measures that pertain to management, communities must have a management plan, professional staff, tree ordinances, and an advisory or advocacy organization. It is unclear whether attaining the CARS measures reflects the status of the urban f...

We characterized wildfire transmission and exposure within a matrix of large land tenures (federal, state, and private) surrounding 56 communities within a 3.3 million ha fire prone region of central Oregon US. Wildfire simulation and network analysis were used to quantify the exchange of fire among land tenures and communities and analyze the relative contributions of human versus natural ignitions to wildfire exposure. Among the land tenures examined, the area burned by incoming fires averaged...

To better understand how businesses’ motivation and support for green projects varies by their organizational objectives and characteristics, this study investigates a case of urban forestry carbon credits in a broader context of climate change mitigation efforts. Companies and organizations currently participating in the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) were surveyed regarding their perception of consumers’ concerns with climate change, attitudes toward government regulations, factors important t...

An analysis of trees in Douglas County, Kansas, reveals that this area has about 14,164,000 trees with tree and shrub canopy that covers 25.2 percent of the county. The most common tree species are American elm, northern hackberry, eastern redcedar, Osage-orange, and honeylocust. Trees in Douglas County currently store about 1.7 million tons of carbon (6.4 million tons CO2) valued at $124 million. In addition, these trees remove about 82,000 tons of carbon per year (300,000 tons CO2 per year val...

Evaluating the Likelihood of Tree Failure in Naples, Florida
https://scholarworks.umass.edu/nrc_faculty_pubs/43... [Health and Safety] [Urban Forestry] [Journal Article] 2020
Authors: Ryan W. klein, Andrew K. Koeser, Brian Kane, Shawn M. Laundry, Heather Shields, et al.
Trees in residential landscapes provide many benefits, but can injure persons and damage property when they fail. In hurricane-prone regions like Florida, USA, the regular occurrence of hurricanes has provided an opportunity to assess factors that influence the likelihood of wind-induced tree failure and develop species failure profiles. We assessed open-grown trees in Naples, Florida, following the passage of Hurricane Irma in September 2017 to determine the effect of relevant factors on the ...

Trees make our cities more attractive and provide many ecosystem services, including air quality improvement, energy conservation, stormwater interception, and atmospheric carbon dioxide reduction. These benefits must be weighed against the costs of maintaining trees, including planting, pruning, irrigation, administration, pest control, liability, cleanup, and removal. We present benefits and costs for representative small, medium, and large deciduous trees and coniferous trees in the Northeast...
Carbon storage and sequestration by trees in urban and community areas of the United States - PubMed

Carbon storage and sequestration by urban trees in the United States was quantified to assess the magnitude and role of urban forests in relation to climate change. Urban tree field data from 28 cities and 6 states were used to determine the average carbon density per unit of tree cover. These data were applied to statewide urban tree cover measurements to determine total urban forest carbon storage and annual sequestration by state and nationally. Urban whole tree carbon storage densities avera...
Digital forestry in the wildland urban interface
https://www.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/pubs/27724... [Fire Risk Management] [] [Journal Article] 2006
Michael C. Wimberly Yangjian Zhang John A. Stanturf
Growing human populations have led to the expansion of the Wildland-Urban interface (WUI) across the southeastern United States. The juxtaposition of buildings, infrastructure, and forests in the WUI creates challenges for natural resource managers. The presence of flammable vegetation, high rates of human-caused ignitions and high building densities combine to increase risks of catastrophic loss from wildfire in the WUI. At the same time, fragmentation of large ownerships into smaller parcels a...
