Even as they increase the beauty of our surroundings, trees provide us with a great many ecosystem services, including air quality improvement, energy conservation, stormwater interception, and atmospheric carbon dioxide reduction. These benefits must be weighed against the costs of maintaining trees, including planting, pruning, irrigation, administration, pest control, liability, cleanup, and removal. We present benefits and costs for representative small, medium, and large deciduous trees and...

Differences in urban forest visitor preferences for emerald ash borer-impacted areas
https://academic.oup.com/forestry/article/93/2/225... [Urban Forestry] [Invasive Species] [Journal Article] 2020
Arne Arnberger, Ingrid E Schneider, Renate Eder, Ami Choi
Emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive forest insect from Asia, has impacted vast areas in the United States and European Russia. To proactively understand the social impact of an EAB invasion in Europe and the USA, this study analyzed visitors’ preferences and preference heterogeneity for EAB-impacted forest scenarios in Vienna, Austria (n = 510) and Minneapolis, USA (n = 307). An image-based discrete choice experiment with latent-class analysis among on-site completed questionnaires in Vienna in...
Sleepless in the city: Urban heat wakes up tree pests – EcoIPM

Chances are the tree in your yard or next to your street has pests like aphids, spider mites, or scale insects. Scientists and anyone who works with trees have known for a century that urban and suburban trees have more pests than forest trees. You might expect trees out in the. to be more exposed to pests than trees in our nice clean (some might say sterile) yards and parking lots. Our lab has studied why pests love urban trees for several years. It turns out that cities are hotter than fo...

Trees in cities can contribute significantly to human health and environmental quality. Unfortunately, little is known about the urban forest resource in the State of Tennessee and what it contributes locally and regionally in terms of ecology, economy, and social wellbeing. In an effort to better understand this resource and its values, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis, and community forestry programs, in partnership with USDA Forest Servic...
Remove and Repurpose: Increasing the value of urban wood - US Forest Service Research & Development
https://www.fs.fed.us/research/urban-webinars/recl... [Urban Wood Utilization] [] [Report] 2015
Steve Bratkovich, Dave Gamstetter
Urban wood utilization is a smart use of local resources that can add revenue to an urban forestry program. Many municipalities are encountering an increase in urban tree removals as invasive pests infiltrate their urban forests. Others are simply wondering if there is a better way to use their urban wood waste and avoid a drain on the budget for tree removal. In this webinar, our speakers will share tips and lessons learned to help you start or expand your urban wood use program. Steve Bratko...

Looking back at 10 years of woodworking in Northern Colorado. It all started with the idea that urban wood. from trees that grew in the city of Fort Collins and other Northern Colorado communities. At the time, Baldwin Hardwoods owner Ryan Baldwin worked in the tree industry and saw hardwood trees being removed and sent to the landfill, rather than being put to good use. With access to a borrowed sawmill, Ryan began milling wood and learning how to dry it in a hand-built solar kiln. His con...

An analysis of trees in Casper, WY reveals that this city has about 123,000 trees with canopies that cover 8.9 percent of the area. The most common tree species are plains cottonwood, blue spruce, and American elm. The urban forest currently store about 37,000 tons of carbon valued at $689,000. In addition, these trees remove about 1,200 tons of carbon per year ($22,000 per year) and about 50 tons of air pollution per year ($249,000 per year). The structural, or compensatory, value is estimated ...

Phoenix is partnering with the nation’s oldest conservation nonprofit to achieve what the group calls “tree equity” by 2030. The nonprofit American Forests describes tree equity as making sure all neighborhoods get the benefits trees provide. Through a memorandum of understanding with Phoenix, the group will focus on growing urban forests in heat vulnerable communities, including Councilmember Carlos Garcia’s district. “We know heat does not affect everyone equally,” he said during Wednesday’s c...
Effect of Plot and Sample Size on Timing and Precision of Urban Forest Assessments

Accurate field data can be used to assess ecosystem services from trees and to improve urban forest management, yet little is known about the optimization of field data collection in the urban environment. Various field and Geographic Information System (GIS) tests were performed to help understand how time costs and precision of tree population estimates change with varying plot and sample sizes in urban areas using random sampling approaches. Using one-tenth acre (0.04 ha) plots, it is estimat...

Urbanization Effects on Timberland by Ownership Class: A Modified Multinomial Logit Analysis | Southern Journal of Applied Forestry | Oxford Academic

In this study, a modified multinomial logit approach is used to examine the determinants of timberland by ownership class using county level data in Georgia from 1972 to 2000. We model timberland use by private industry ownership and nonindustrial private forestland ownership, in addition to agriculture, urban uses, and other land uses. Urbanization and other socioeconomic variables have different levels of influence on timberland ownership classes, private forest industry, and nonindustrial pri...
Atmospheric carbon dioxide reduction by Sacramento s urban forest | Treesearch
https://www.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/pubs/61659... [Environment and Sustainability] [Urban Forestry] [Journal Article] 1998
E.G. McPherson
Sacramento County's 6 million trees store 8 million tons of CO2 (31 t/ha), and annually sequester 238,000 t (0.92 t/ha). Air-conditioning (157 GWh) and space-heating (145 TJ) savings from the urban forest further reduce emissions by 75,600 t of CO2 annually (0.29 t/ha). These avoided emissions are only 32% of the amount sequestered, due to a clean, hydroelectric energy supply. Annual CO, release associated with tree maintenance is estimated at 9,400 t (0.04 t/ha), or 3% of the amount sequestered...
