What is the US Tree Map?. Accurate and updated tree cover data is critical for effectively managing our tree resources. The US Tree Map (UTM) is the most detailed and up-to-date source of tree cover data for the country. It provides information on presence/absence of trees at 60 cm resolution, accurately capturing individual trees and small gaps in the forest. The data is refreshed annually to capture changes in tree cover due to deforestation, urbanization, land-use change and natural disas...

Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis; EAB) is an insect native to Asia. It was introduced into North America sometime during the 1990s, probably via ash wood pallets or wood packing material. Since its initial discovery in southeastern Michigan in 2002, this insect has killed millions of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) throughout the central and northeastern United States and Canada. EAB is now considered the most destructive tree insect pest ever to be introduced into North America. An infestation...

Trees make our cities more attractive and provide many ecosystem services, including air quality improvement, energy conservation, stormwater interception, and atmospheric carbon dioxide reduction. These benefits must be weighed against the costs of maintaining trees, including planting, pruning, irrigation, administration, pest control, liability, cleanup, and removal. We present benefits and costs for representative small, medium, and large deciduous trees and coniferous trees in the Northern ...

Maine Dept of Conservation
An area of recent concern is the increasing amount of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) throughout the state of Maine. WUI is defined as the area where homes meet the forest and are at risk from wildfire. As Maine communities grow, the threat of a fire in the Wildland Urban Interface increases as well. Fires in the WUI can originate in the forests and threaten homes or start as structural fires and threaten the forests. This video is targeted towards homeowners who live in Maine's WUI and offers su...
Trees in the city: valuing street trees in Portland, Oregon | Treesearch
https://www.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/pubs/36186... [Urban Forestry] [] [Journal Article] 2010
G.H. Donovan; D.T. Butry
We use a hedonic price model to simultaneously estimate the effects of street trees on the sales price and the time-on-market (TOM) of houses in Portland. Oregon. On average, street trees add $8,870 to sales price and reduce TOM by 1.7 days. In addition, we found that the benefits of street trees spill over to neighboring houses. Because the provision and maintenance of street trees in Portland is the responsibility of adjacent property owners, our results suggest that if the provision of street...

Trees provide multiple benefits and costs to society that should be considered in planning for the future. Benefits include moderating climate, lowering energy use in buildings, reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), improving air and water quality, mitigating rainfall runoff and flooding, enhancing aesthetics, human health and social well-being, as well as lowering noise impacts. Trees also have various costs associated with planting, maintenance, and removal. There are indirect costs su...

Currently, carbon credit prices frequently do not reflect the type and location of offset projects. Because of the social image and ancillary benefits, buyers may place higher value on credits sourced from certain types of projects such as urban forestry. This study surveyed carbon credit buyers participating in the Chicago Climate Exchange to assess their preferences for credits from various offset projects. Specifically, it evaluated the desirability of carbon credits sourced from urban forest...

While the urban forest is considered an eligible source of carbon offset credits, little is known about its market potential and the quality aspects of the credits. As credit suppliers increase in number and credit buyers become more interested in purchasing carbon credits, it is unclear whether and how urban forest carbon credits can perform relative to the other types of carbon credits available in the market. Delivering quality credits would be crucial especially in voluntary markets such as ...

Wildland fire in the South commands considerable attention, given the expanding wildland urban interface (WUI) across the region. Much of this growth is propelled by higher income retirees and others desiring natural amenity residential settings. However, population growth in the WUI increases the likelihood of wildfire fire ignition caused by people, as humans account for 93% of all wildfires fires in the South. Coexisting with newly arrived, affluent WUI populations are working class, poor or ...
