Best Management Practices (BMPs) for preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species were developed specifically targeting four types of activity:. Forestry, Recreation, Urban Forestry and Rights-of-Way. The four manuals are available at the Wisconsin Council on Forestry website. The voluntary BMPs outlined in the manuals can be expanded to guide other types of land use activities and minimize the riskof spreading or introducing invasive species. Modeling of air pollutant removal by dry deposition to urban trees using a WRF/CMAQ/i-Tree Eco coupled system
https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/46512... [Urban Forestry] [Environment and Sustainability] [Journal Article] 2013
Cabaraban, Maria Theresa I.; Kroll, Charles N.; Hirabayashi, Satoshi; Nowak, David J.
A distributed adaptation of i-Tree Eco was used to simulate dry deposition in an urban area. This investigation focused on the effects of varying temperature, LAI, and NO2 concentration inputs on estimated NO2 dry deposition to trees in Baltimore, MD. A coupled modeling system is described, wherein WRF provided temperature and LAI fields, and CMAQ provided NO2 concentrations. A base case simulation was conducted using built-in distributed i-Tree Eco tools, and simulations using different inputs ...

This is thanks to a partnership between the school and Hoppe Tree Service. The partnership centers around the concept of using locally sourced urban wood from Hoppe Tree Service s Urban Wood Lab Store. The agreement not only provides lumber for the school, but also allows the student s non...

Tree inventories – Urban Forest Analytics

Tree inventories are powerful management and planning tools. There are three types commonly carried out:. Sample: a random selection used to estimate properties of the whole forest. Partial: a non-random selection, such as all declining trees. Full: all trees, and often planting sites as well. It is possible to calculate the economic benefits of the trees recorded by any of these approaches. A sample tree inventory examines a random sample of a community s urban trees instead of every sing...

A modeling study of the impact of urban trees on ozone

A modeling study of the impact of urban trees on ozone. This publication is available only online. Abstract Modeling the effects of increased urban tree cover on ozone concentrations (July 13-15, 1995) from Washington, DC, to central Massachusetts reveals that urban trees generally reduce ozone concentrations in cities, but tend to increase average ozone concentrations in the overall modeling domain During the daytime, average ozone reductions in urban areas (1 ppb) were greater than the avera...
Compensatory value of urban trees in the United States
https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/5522... [Urban Forestry] [] [Journal Article] 2002
Nowak, David J.; Crane, Daniel E.; Dwyer, John F.
Understanding the value of an urban forest can give decision makers a better foundation for urban tree namagement. Based on tree-valuation methods of the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers and field data from eight cities, total compensatory value of tree populations in U.S. cities ranges from $101 million in Jersey City, New Jersey, to $6.2 billion in New York, New York. Compensatory values represent compensation to owners for the loss of an individual tree an can be viewed as the value o...
A conceptual framework of urban forest ecosystem vulnerability | Publications | SRS
https://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/pubs/54835... [Urban Forestry] [Environment and Sustainability] [Journal Article] 2017
Steenberg, James W.N.; Millward, Andrew A.; Nowak, David J.; Robinson, Pamela J.
The urban environment is becoming the most common setting in which people worldwide will spend their lives. Urban forests, and the ecosystem services they provide, are becoming a priority for municipalities. Quantifying and communicating the vulnerability of this resource are essential for maintaining a consistent and equitable supply of these ecosystem services. We propose a theory-based conceptual framework for the assessment of urban forest vulnerability that integrates the biophysical, built...
Large-scale urban tree removal using mechanized logging equipment
https://forestrynews.blogs.govdelivery.com/2020/04... [Urban Wood Utilization] [] [Report] 2020
Don Peterson
With thousands of trees on their properties, municipalities and other urban ownerships sometimes need to remove a large volume of trees at once, such as after an insect or disease outbreak (i. , emerald ash borer) or a catastrophic weather event (wind/tornadoes or ice/snow damage). When this need arises, what are the options available to remove these trees efficiently, safely, cost effectively and quickly?. Mechanized logging equipment has become the standard for traditional tree harvests in m...
